Ethiopia is preparing for a legal framework to protect domestic workers’ rights and provide legal contracts for them. The Ministry of Labor and Skills has announced the completion of preliminary preparations, which will benefit both domestic and foreign employment sectors. The Ethiopian Trade Unions Confederation (E.T.U.CO) is urging the government to swiftly enact regulations aligned with Labor Proclamation 1156/2019 to safeguard domestic workers against exploitation and abuse. E.T.U.CO is working to empower domestic workers to organize and address common issues. E.T.U.CO President, Zerihun Gezahgn, emphasizes the importance of ratifying the ILO Convention No. 189 to ensure their inclusion in labor laws and effective organization. Experts from various organizations have reached a mutual agreement to collaborate and address human rights and labor rights violations faced by domestic workers.
